You chose incorrectly

Allow us to point out why this was the wrong choice.

By now, you’ll start to see some similarities in the tactics criminals use across channels.

If this one looks legitimate to you, that’s because it’s based on a legit one. You must remember that cyber criminals have access to the same resources we do. These criminals could place a Walmart order or send a gift card to themselves, and then copy the email design and verbiage verbatim just to fool you.

Unfortunately, with the help of AI and grammar correction tools, we can’t rely on misspelled words or poor grammar to help us identify a fraudulent email. We have to look a little closer.

  • Incorrect Email: Cybercriminals cannot use legitimate email domains, but they can try to trick you into not noticing one that is close to a legit domain.
  • Clock’s Ticking: “Your gift card is expiring!” But you just heard about it? And it’s already expiring? Scam.
    • They are trying to rush you into making a mistake.
  • Suspicious Content: Were you expecting a gift card from someone? If not, be cautious immediately.
    • $150 for no reason, with no sender’s name is another reason to be cautious.
    • As much as we’d all appreciate a free $150 gift card, it’s simply too good to be true.
