Are you aware of the latest updates regarding Basic Authentication Deprecation and Windows Protected Print Mode that Microsoft is pushing to copiers and printers?

BASIC AUTHENTICATION DEPRECATION (RETIREMENT):

• March 1st, 2026 (gradual deactivation begins for SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) Authentication called Basic Authentication
• April 30th, 2026: Full deactivation, Basic Authentication will no longer work.

Microsoft is retiring Basic Authentication for Exchange Online, requiring organizations to transition to Modern Authentication (OAuth 2.0) to enhance email security and reduce attack risks.

When this happens, “scan to my email” or similar scanning functions will be severed and will not work without OAuth or added software to relay your emails through Microsoft Exchange.

If you have a Kyocera, you’re in luck: built in OAuth is coming to new devices. Older devices can utilize Kyocera Exchange Online Connector or Kyocera Cloud Capture (KCC).

WINDOWS PROTECTED PRINT MODE:

Windows Protected Print Mode (WPP) is a major security update that eliminates the need for third-party print drivers, reducing vulnerabilities and requiring fewer user privileges. This is an alternative to Universal Print.

However, enabling WPP prematurely may cause compatibility issues with certain devices and finishing options, so careful evaluation is essential before activation.

This is available now and will default in 2027. We recommend that you hold off before enabling WPP as we wait for the PSAs (Printer Support Applications) to further develop. This will allow for more compatibility between Windows Protected Print and your copier.
