Smishing attempts are similar to Scareware; they want to scare you or trick you into interacting with their trap.
- Too Good to Be True: These scams are as old as the internet. The all-inclusive cruise, the free iPhone, the large sum of money, all just fall into your lap? No. If it’s too good to be true. It is.
- You should be hesitant even if the message said you won a $20 gift card, let alone this lump sum of money.
- Odd Sender: This example has a more normal phone number, which could potentially cause some recipients to trust it. However, if you don’t recognize any number or email that contacts you, do not trust it.
- Act Now: All caps, “NOW,” is a dead giveaway. Be cautious of anything that is attempting to get you to move quickly.
